UNDERSTANDING CAR HIRE INSURANCES Many of the car rentals via Shop4CarHire are inclusive of insurance cover although it does vary by destination and vehicle. Its worth understanding exactly what these acronyms mean and what's included, so you can decide if you need additional cover. Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) - this is the basic level of cover and reduces your liability in the event of an accident. Without it, you could be forced to pay the replacement cost of the vehicle. Theft Waiver (TW) - the equivalent of CDW but protects you against theft, also known as theft protection. Third Party Indemnity (TP) - protects you against any third party claims due to damage or injury. Super Collision Damage Waiver (SCDW) - this reduces your liability to zero and usually includes cover for tyres, roofs, windscreens and glass. Personal Insurance (PI) - pays out if you injury or kill yourself or a passenger. This is usually included as part of regular travel insurance. Personal Effects Cover (PEC) - covers your property whilst in the vehicle against theft. This may also be included within regular travel insurance or even all risks household insurance. The minimum cover that should come included is CDW, theft waiver and third party liability. However these can leave a lot uncovered so you may require additional insurance. CAR HIRE EXCESS As above, many car rentals from Shop4CarHire include car hire excess although it does vary depending on destination and the vehicle so please check the rental conditions. If excluded, car hire excess can be as high as 500 pounds which means if you have an accident the first 500 pounds will be charged to your credit card. The car hire insurance will only pay any amount above this figure. CAR HIRE EXCESS INSURANCE If car hire excess is excluded you may wish to take out additional insurance. When making a reservation you will be given this option although there is a daily charge which is paid in advance. If you are away for several days (typically 7 or more) you may wish to consider an annual policy as this usually works out cheaper and covers you all year. The price for standard car excess insurance within Europe is 49 pounds and covers up to additional 7 drivers. Further details can be obtained at Insurance4CarHire |
